There are things to consider when surfing. First being your life. If you are not secured from harms way then you got a lot of chances to deal with. There are dangerous things that could go wrong. You ever know when a shark will show up. Here are some easy tips to follow when surfing.

The first thing to consider when going surfing is your mental state. Are you thinking right or are you scared of going into the water not knowing what could happen. Then there is the physical aspect of the sport which is required to actually be produced. You have to know how to swim in order to go with the water and not be dragged to the bottom or into deep water. Another thing to consider is to get certified in CPR and First Aid. It helps when a fellow surfer suffers an accident, as well for your own knowledge.

Apart from yourself there has to be a third person involved at least, like a life guard or friends. Make sure to ask the life guard before going in to surf about the rules to follow, as every beach has its own laws. An important law for example is to always wear a leash. It will help prevent endangering other surfers and keep your hands safe.

Finally we have the conditions beyond anyone’s control, like the weather and animals roaming the beach. So consult the life guard as to update you on any dangerous situations currently present on the beach. Apply sunscreen on sunny days to avoid the dangerous sun rays. Always keep the children close and aid anyone who might need help. Your surfing safety consists of you being aware and comfortable while surfing to your ability.

Surfing is a sport that more people seem to be interested in these days. Water is always a big drawing card for people and learning how to surf has been growing rapidly. Do you really need to take surfing lessons to take up surfing? This is a question that you will have to ask yourself if you plan to take a serious look at surfing. Let us take a look at surfing and if you really need to take lessons.

For some surfing comes natural and they can be hanging ten on waves in no time at all. For others though learning surfing is a lot tougher. Surfing lessons should be considered by beginners who are struggling learning how to surf. Lessons can help you figure out where you are struggling. When you go it alone without an instructor, many times you cannot realize the mistakes that you are making. Another import reason for considering surfing lessons is you will be better prepared when you hit the waves and have a working knowledge of what to do. Many people who just start out surfing need to learn the basics for their own good and safety. When dealing with waves and the water you must have a working knowledge of what you need to do to keep you unharmed.

Surfing at times is made to look very easy, but the truth is it can be very tough to learn for some people. Surfing lessons can be a great way to take your time to learn to surf. Even experience people who have some knowledge of surfing can benefit from refresher courses in surfing. Lessons can be one of the best ways to learn the sport of surfing the right way and probably the quickest.

Rusty Surfboards is a name that has been synoynomous with surfing for a very long time. The history of Rusty Surfboards is one that was ingrained on the beaches of beautfiul Southern California by an adventerous young man that loved the sport of surfing and had a vision that would take the surfing world by storm.

Rusty Preisendorfer is the name sake and founder of Rusty Surfboards and came into the world in 1953 where he would live the first 12 years of his life in San Diego. It was in 1966 that Rusty moved La Jolla and would discover and fall in love with surfing. It would be three years later that he would shape his first surfboard.

The 1970′s would see Rusty attend the University of California at San Diego and then drop out to focus on shaping surfboards and competing all throughout Southern California in surfing contests. He would be sponsored by G&S and would also shape boards for them. It was then that Rusty’s surfboard designs were getting noticed by the surfing world. Rusty would go on throughout the rest of the decade and the early part of the 1980′s designing boards for numerous surfboard companies.

It wasn’t until the mid 1980′s that Rusty Preisendorfer decided to branch out on his own thus giving the surfing world the patented Rusty Surfboards that are so popular to this very day. The years have seen Rusty become an innovator in new designs of surfboards and also ventured into clothing and other water surfing vices. The history of Rusty Surfboards began with the trials and tribulations of the one and only Rusty Preisendorfer.

During the summer of 1950, young Hobart Alter, or Hobie as his friends called him, came up with the idea of combining his love of water with his love of woodworking. Beginning work in the family garage, he began manufacturing nine foot surf boards out of balsa wood. The boards worked well. All of his friends wanted him to build them one.

After a few years of building these boards in the garage, Hobie opened up the first surf shop in Dana Point, California. In 1958, Hobie and his friend Gordon Clark, or Grubby, began experimenting with foam and fiberglass. The new combination was lighter and faster than the balsa wood Hobie had been using.

Hobart Alter was born in Ontario, California. His family also spent a considerable amount of time in Laguna Beach, where Hobie spent much of his time with water sports. His imagination and creativity took him to the level of his own business, which blossomed into building catamarans as well as surf boards.

Today, Hobie Surf Boards are still very popular, although they are no longer manufactured strictly by hand. In the 1950′s, all of Hobie’s boards were shaped and finished by hand with much testing to ensure quality and strength. Today, while the same quality and strength goes into each board, the boards are manufactured by machines, but many are still tuned by hand.

Hobie’s sons have taken over the family business and continue to produce an excellent product. In his day, Hobie was a great surfer as well as a great entrepreneur. Today, Hobie’s company manufacturers many surfboards. Boards from the beginning of production are considered collector’s items which will bring a great price should anyone wish to sell.

There are lots of different types of surfboards from which to choose. The board needs to be a perfect match to the surfer so they will get the most out of the experience. One of the first considerations will be the level of surfer. A beginner will want to get a surfboard which is long and thick. This will reduce the effort needed in order to catch a good wave when first starting out.

More experienced surfers can afford to do a lot of experimenting with different types of boards. The newest type of board is a stand-up paddle board and it is well worth the look. Their preferences can range anywhere from a 10’6 long board down to a 5’4 fish surfboard. Basically, surfers will need to find the board that works the best for them.

The Short Board runs anywhere from 5 to 7 feet long. They have a nose rocker to help keep the front of the board up out of the water while surfing. They also have two fins that aid in maneuverability. These are usually used by more experienced surfers.

The Big Wave Board is from 8 to 9 feet in length. The nose and tail are designed narrow to help the surfer retain their speed. These features also help navigate while surfing.

The Fish Surfboard is somewhat wider and thicker than other boards. Its design makes it easy to catch a wave, but it is not as easy to navigate short quick moves like other boards.

The Fun Board is somewhere between 7′ to 8’2 in length. It is easier to make quicker turns with than the short board.

When it comes to one of the best surfboard makers in the industry and who have designed some of the best surfboards that are around, Becker Surfboards are definitely at the top of the list. It is said that Becker Surfboards have been shaped by more surfers than any. They have been handmade at their headquarters in Hermosa Beach, California for more than 25 years. Now, Becker has outlets all over Southern California and they are by far one of the top surfboard makers in the United States.

The reason that Becker has been able to stay in business for as long as they have is due to them to be able to keep the same employees and family members in the company. They tout themselves in being able to have the same people working for them for well over 20 years. There are a total of 6 stores throughout Southern California with retail outlets in Hermosa Beach, Malibu, Mission Veijo, Corona Del Mar, Huntington Beach, and Encintas.

Another big thing with Becker is that they have taken their expertise with surfboards to other extreme watersports. They also have paddleboards, skimboards, kiteboards, and they also have skateboards by the famed Santa Cruz. As with other surfing companies they also have a long line of clothing accessories. Surfing and water is a passion and vice with Becker Surfboards, not a job. The same passion that you have is the same passion that Becker has. They want you to have the best experience everytime that you go to the beach.

Although the activity of surfing goes back to ancient times in Polynesia, our legendary wave riders have come to us from the last century and the majority in the last thirty years.

No discussion of surfing is complete without mention of the great Duke Kahanamoku, the Ambassador of Aloha. The Duke was the one that has done more than anyone to promote the growth of the sport and lifestyle of surfing. Duke grew up in Waikiki and spent his youth on the beach and in the ocean, polishing his surfing and swimming skills. He won five Olympic metals for his swimming abilities and continued to surf up until his death at the age of 77.

Another household name in the world of surfing is the amazing Laird Hamilton who most consider to be the best big wave rider ever. Laird has a captivating personality, a mischievous nature and an innovative mind that has given him world acclaim and has endeared him to his fellow surfers. Laird is a celebrated public figure, a sportswear model and is credited with riding the most dangerous wave the world can produce in Tahiti.

There is no one that will argue that Kelly Slater is the best surfer that the world has ever known. He has dominated the world of surfing, mesmerized the worlds best and along the way has racked up nine world championships including one being the youngest champion and another being the oldest. Kelly brought surfing along from an amateur event into a full-fledged professional sport. It will be a very long time, if ever, that there will be another Kelly Slater.

The known beginnings of surfing as we know it today, can be traced back to the islands of Polynesia where the fishermen used the breakers to assist them to shore with their catch. We can imagine the exhilaration they felt and this practical means of propulsion soon became a product of passion.

When the Europeans first landed on the island of Tahiti, they observed the inhabitants catching waves in their outrigger canoes simply for the fun of it. When the first Polynesians arrived in Hawaii they had years of practice riding the waves or wave sliding as it was then known. Surfing eventually became a discipline in Hawaii and was reserved only for royalty and the upper classes.

These early aristocrats had their own board shapers, beaches and wave breaks and no one of a lower order dared to intrude on these sacred places. Only certain trees were used and once felled a fish was placed in the hole as an offering to the Gods. The boards used in ancient Hawaii were from 4 to 24 feet in length with the larger boards reserved for royalty.

Surfing first came to North America in the early 1900s when George Freeth brought it to California from Hawaii. He traveled up and down the coast demonstrating the art as more of a stunt than a sport. The “Duke” Kahanamoku first exposed the sport to the world but it wasn’t until the early 60s that surfing, as we know it, really took off. Since then it has become a largely followed culture, predominately in Hawaii, California and Australia with worldwide competitions and the subject on many movies and documentaries.

Great surfing opportunities exist on every continent around the world and there are literally tens of thousands of wave breaks for every level of experience. There are surfing spots with gentle breaks for the novice riders and infamous waves that even the world-class wave riders consider to be, as dangerous as typhoid. Of all the surfing locations on earth, here are the good, the bad and the ugly.

Queensland’s gold coast is known as the surfers paradise and its 40 miles of white sand beach offers both the novice and experienced wave riders an endless amount of breaks. The surf here is consistent with good, easy, breaks nearly daily. In times of cyclones and strong east winds the swells can grow to some awesome point breaks.

The north shore of Hawaii is well-known for its large surf and the pipeline may be considered one of the perfect waves on earth. Sunset beach and Waimea bay produce some of the most awesome swells know and in the winter months it can become downright dangerous. Waves can go from two feet to twenty-five in the course of a day and at Waimea they can crank up to fifty feet.

The Cortes Banks is a huge reef that lies 115 miles due west from San Diego, California and at times of light winds, low tides and big swells out of the northwest can produce some of the biggest surf on the planet. The kamikaze surfers are pulled into the waves with jetskis and in 2001 and 2008, Mike Parsons won the swell/XXL big wave awards riding waves of 66 and 70 feet respectively
